Clarification on Federal Funding for Downtown Revitalization

Estevan, SK ( March 19, 2024) – The City of Estevan council and administration would like to resolve some ongoing inquiries about the Downtown Revitalization project, confirmed to take place this year. The $7.75 million funding approval from the federal government’s Canadian Coal Transition Initiative (CCTI) Infrastructure fund was given specifically to address the downtown improvements and not provided to the city for other uses or made available to reassign to another purpose or project.

The project will focus solely on the street-facing underground and street-level infrastructure of 4th Street, from 11th Avenue to 13th Avenue. The project will address a much-needed underground system replacement, as well as improving the usability of the downtown core. Phase I of the Downtown Revitalization project, the only phase approved, will make use of the provided $7.75 million, plus the City’s investment of $1.5 million. This investment from the City will be spent through reallocating debt reduction funds for one year, and not reflected through a tax increase.

This provided funding for the Downtown Revitalization project, should it not be used for this initiative, cannot be used for an alternate project within the community and will be forfeited.
