What do firefighters do?

Estevan firefighters respond are trained in specialty rescue and firefighting.

There are four main areas where the Estevan Fire and Rescue react.

  • Fire Suppression
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Rescue
  • Hazardous Material

Other key services are fire prevention, public education and information, and emergency preparedness and awareness.

In 2016 there were 246 Emergency calls:

  • 62 – Fire and Rescue / Mutual Aid / Dwelling – garage fire / Water rescue / STARS landing zone / Vehicle fire / Train derailment / EMS assistance / Power pole – Transformer fires
  • 23 –Motor vehicle collision responses
  • 104 – Commercial and residential activated fire alarm responses
  • 7 – Elevator Rescue responses
  • 9 – Wildland, Grassland, Field fire responses
  • 32 – Gas leak, Carbon Monoxide, Propane leak, Ammonia leak
  • 9 – Noxious odors and smoke investigation responses
Firefighters undergo ongoing training aimed at providing a reinforcement of fundamentals combined with a continual awareness of technical change. Firefighters are trained in the equipment and methods used to suppress fire along with building construction styles (an awareness of how buildings react under fire conditions).
