The City of Estevan makes road maintenance and repairs a top priority. The Roads & Drainage department takes care of a list of services in the spring, summer and fall months such as; pothole repairs, line painting, back lane repairs, sidewalk repairs, dead animals on the road and street cleaning.
There are approximately 30 km of back lanes that are maintained by the road crews. The repairs are completed in priority order as needed. Maintenance starts once crews have finished spring cleanup and continues throughout the summer and into the fall.

Road lines help drivers maintain proper position on roadways, separate opposite flows of traffic, and help indicate and direct traffic into the proper channels. Once the roads are dry and spring street sweeping is underway, line painting begins.
A typical paint season runs from May to October. (weather permitting) This allows for high traffic locations to be painted more than once a year. Higher traffic locations are painted 2- 3 times a year.
There are various road markings, including:
- Crosswalks
- Lane lines
- Arrows
- On-street parking stalls
- Railway stop lines

Potholes can develop on any of the 75 km of paved streets and roads throughout Estevan. Potholes form when snow melts into cracks in the asphalt and then freezes, expanding in the cracks. Meanwhile, the frost in the ground pushes up, weakening the asphalt.
Dry pavement and warm weather conditions are needed when repairing potholes. Potholes repair generally starts in April and continues throughout the summer months.
During the pothole repair program, crews are out working seven days a week. The majority of the repairs happen during the day, but some are done in the evening or early morning when there is less traffic.

The spring cleanup program, which removes sanding materials and debris that has accumulated on the roads during the winter months starts once the streets are dry in early spring. An initial full City wide street sweeping program will commence once weather permits. After the initial cleanup sweepers will begin the yearly sweeper schedule. No parking signs are posted on scheduled streets to notify drivers of upcoming curb to curb sweeping through residential neighbourhoods.
