Things to do in and around Estevan this Family Day Weekend

By: Jacquelyn Massey-Rounds

If the cold temperatures and icy winds this week haven’t frozen your heart to the magic of winter, you may be getting excited for the long weekend and all its possibilities! Family Day was first recognized in Alberta in 1990 to pay homage to the importance of home and the foundation of family. It wouldn’t be until 2007 that Saskatchewan would also adopt Family Day, and new traditions were born! If you are looking for something to do in and around Estevan this Family Day weekend, well my friends, look no further.

Family Day Free Fishing Weekend

The cold temperatures have made this weekend the perfect opportunity to get out and experience ice fishing! From February 19-21, Saskatchewan residents and visitors may fish any provincial waterbody that have an open sport fishing season, without buying a fishing license. This weekend’s license lift doesn’t apply to provincial national parks and participants are encouraged to visit Saskatchewan.ca for more information and tips to keep everyone safe.

Did someone say hockey?

Looking for maybe a different type of ice? Head to Affinity Place this weekend for some action-packed, high-speed hockey. On Saturday night, the rivalry continues at home as the Estevan Bruins face the Weyburn Red Wings. The evening will include a live jersey auction with Mack Auctions and a $4000 guaranteed take home 50/50 prize. Don’t miss all the action when the puck drops at 7:30pm!

Can’t get enough? Sunday afternoon the Estevan Bears take on the Regina Pat Canadians at Affinity Place. The game starts at 4pm! Sunday is also the last day to get in on the online 50/50 action. Visit www.estevanbears5050.ca by 2pm on Sunday for your chance at over $3500.

Family Fun for everyone!

If the outdoors isn’t for you this weekend, Estevan is proud to have some wonderful community programming available for the whole family! Drop by the library this Saturday, February 19th to check out some new books and have the kids participate in Lego Club at 2pm. The library will be closed on Family Day, but open 9:30am – 6pm on Saturday and 1pm-5pm on Sunday.

Estevan Art Gallery & Museum will host Family Clay Days on February 21st. Please contact them at educator@eagm.ca or call 306-634-7644 to inquire about February and March programming.

Bring the whole family to the Estevan Leisure Centre

There’s lots of swimming going on this weekend at the Estevan Leisure Centre! Saturday will feature the Lions Free Swim from 3pm-5pm and on Sunday there will be Family Swim from 1pm-3pm.

On Family Day, the facility will be open 12pm-5pm for those wanting to use the walking track, weight room or squash courts. We are thrilled to announce that the Lions Club of Estevan will be sponsoring a FREE SWIM on Family Day from 1pm-4pm. A big thanks to the Lions for their generosity again this season!

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

This weekend throw on your layers and get moving! Head out to Woodlawn Regional Park to enjoy some hiking, bird watching or snow shoeing. Make an adventure of it with your family and have a list of scavenger hunt items to keep an eye out for while your enjoy time outside.

The City of Estevan’s new pedestrian walking paths aren’t just for warmer weather! Invite friends or family out for a group walk this weekend and enjoy over 13 kilometers of paved walking paths in and around the community.
