Heroines

Heroine means a woman who is admired for her courage, bravery, and noble qualities. A heroine is often a woman who is recognized for her achievement in her field.  The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum recently put together an exhibit titled Heroines; the exhibit ends August 26th, 2017.

he Heroines exhibit celebrates 18 different women who call Estevan home. These women have excelled in work, they have dedicated time to volunteering and to the arts, and they have shown their commitment to the community.

The women featured in the exhibit were just a few of those who were nominated for this project. Many local women were nominated during the nomination period which started last November of last year and ended in May.

I visually enjoyed the layout of Heroines, black and white portraits taken in a setting that truly captures who these women are.

There is a catalogue provided at the exhibition, it holds interviews with each woman. That catelogue is great to read while you are visiting the exhibition as it allows you to learn their story and why each if these women love Estevan.

It is important to get involved in the community and support the things you love. Good things happen to those who work hard, and these women sure do that!

It’s exciting to go through an exhibit and know over half of the individuals displayed. I was around a lot of these women growing up; they were family friends, teachers, and parents of friends.

All of the women displayed are very inspiring and it was a delightful afternoon being able to experience Heroines!

“It doesn’t matter where you were born or where you come from, never give up on your dreams; they can come true”- Lorie-Gay Drewitz- Gallaway

One of my favourite quotes from the interviews with one of the women. I grew up taking dance lessons from Lorie-Gay and always found her to be an inspiring lady. The context of the quote is Lorie-Gay giving advice to aspiring dancers, but it is true for anyone following their dreams.

One should never be afraid to open new doors and try new things because sometimes the only person standing in our way is you. You should never be afraid to make your mark in the world. If you’re happy and you’re passionate about something then you should, by all means, pursue it.

All of the women in the exhibit had a passion and a goal and worked hard to achieve it. A city like Estevan has so many opportunities that we should be grateful to have. I highly recommend that you to experience the Heroines exhibit while it is still at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum.

Till next time,

Michelle
